Deon Taylor will direct and produce horror pic “Akuma” for his newly minted Hidden Empire Film Group label.
Screen Media Films has secured worldwide distribution rights and is planning a U.S. theatrical release next fall. Roxanne Avent will also produce.
Taylor wrote the screenplay with Blayne Weaver and Joe Bockol.
The movie follows a young Japanese woman looking to put her life back together after a recent tragedy. As she pushes hard to overcome her problems she realizes that she’s fighting something very dark.
Taylor said “Akuma” (Japanese for demon) is a mix between “Paranormal Activity” and “The Exorcist.” He will use a handheld style of shooting.
The film will be shot in Los Angeles, Sacramento, Japan and San Francisco. Shooting’s scheduled to begin Nov. 10.
Taylor’s last film was horror thriller “Chain Letter,” starring Nikki Reed, which Taylor wrote, directed and produced. Pic was released theatrically last fall. Taylor and Screen Media recently partnered to launch a new specialty comedy label titled “LMAO All Star Comedy Series.”
